How is this possible?!

The innovative technology and chemistry behind Elumen is amazing. The basic gist of its ionic technology is this. You hair is positively charged. Traditional coloring (i.e. permanent or demi-permanent) requires an aggressive lifting of the hair cuticle to deposit the color. During this chemical process, hair can end up feeling dry or damaged if not used extremely carefully. With Elumen, the color is negatively charged. So, the color and the hair naturally attract to one another. Because the reaction is natural, it offers the durability of a permanent hair color. Although this color is great for healthy hair, learn below how Elumen can help the appearance and feel of dry/damaged hair.

Glenda came to us after a harsh coloring which left her hair extremely damaged. It took a month of nurturing her hair with ARROJO product (containing vitamin B5 which is essential for hair health) and 2 trims to remove the singed chemically burned hair which was about an inch and a half on her ends. Here’s her hair after cut #2. As you can see the ends are still fragile, frayed, and porous which leaves the color dull.

WOW! Can you imagine the horror? We’re going to take you through a few precautions to ensure this NEVER happens to you!

When using heat styling tools to style the hair, the same rules do not apply for everyone. First, take a look at your hair’s current condition. Is it dry, brittle, shiny, slick, has it been colored, how many times, has it been lightened? All of these things play a role in how hot is too hot. We always recommend buying a heat styling tool that has a heat setting so you can adjust the temperature properly.

Let’s talk about protection. No matter the condition of the hair, if heat touches it, it should be protected with a heat protectant. This “hair tutorial gone wrong” is another great reason to use professional brand products over drug store brands. The product the girl used in the video was TRESemme Split Remedy Leave-in conditioner which has NO HEAT PROTECTANT IN IT. Now, let’s discuss the temperatures on your tools. A lot of tools (like the ARROJO/Izunami flat iron) get as hot as 450 degrees. This does not mean it’s intended for use on your hair. In most cases, this is the setting that WILL cause your hair to melt. Some hair types and conditions require a hotter setting, such as a healthy head of course curls. But, thin fine hair cannot stand higher settings and should be taken down a few notches. Coloring your hair and heat styling regularly can weaken the hair. Because of this, it’s essential to keep the heat turned down. Otherwise, you are going to create more damage and ultimately your hair will be breaking off quicker than it is growing. Don’t most of us want long luscious hair?? Here’s our recommended heat guide to follow:

1. Completely dry hair before heat styling. Moisture makes hair more susceptible to burning.

2. Distribute heat protectant evenly throughout out hair.

3.Adjust heat setting:

• thick, coarse, extremely curly hair- 350-400 degrees
• medium density, or colored hair- 300-350 degrees
• fine, lightened, or dry hair- 250-300 degrees
• damaged hair- no heat

4.Keep heat tool moving throughout hair as much as possible. Do not let the tool sit idol for more than 4-5 seconds. Imagine letting an iron sit on clothes for long periods of time, it will burn/damage the clothes, so you keep the iron moving back and forth. In the video, the girl suggested “20 seconds or more.” Clearly, that was too long.

5.Additional tips- With the correct hair products, brushes, and blow-drying technique, some hair types can get sleek and smooth with out a flat iron. You may be damaging your hair with heat unnecessarily. Ask your stylist if you have the right hair texture. Additionally, embracing your natural texture regularly keeps hair healthier so that heat styling isn’t as risky. Healthy hair is next to goddess hair.

We’ve teamed with makeup artist, Neely Walker, who works at the M.A.C. cosmetics counter in Tupelo. She has her eye on upcoming Spring makeup trends and is spilling all the details! Here’s what she has to say..

Get ready for Spring trends in makeup as they trickle down from SS13 runway all the way to your local markets. This year the top makeup artists interpreted looks specific to the designers they worked with and transferred the vision through makeup. Artists such as Kabuki, Pat McGrath and Tom Pecheux channeled trends that embody a spectrum of ethereal to bold. These are my standout looks as Spring headliners in makeup. The good news is they are all easy, achievable looks. Brushes, as always, are 75% of the work.

And, the fabulous trends are…..

Feminine and Glamorous

Kabuki, working with designers The Blonds, focused on the eyes with dramatic contour that was well blended with color. The cat-eye varied from the classic Bardot look to the more modern, unattached lines. All lines were formulated with gel liners with very bold and very black application. Color was only added sparingly.*

 *For liner, try M.A.C.’s Fluidline. It provides a smooth finish and is long-wearing. Best of all, it will not smudge.

*Brushes: Small and angled with stiff bristles to keep the lines straight (M.A.C. #263 or #209). For smudging and contouring, try a more flexible blending brush with natural hairs (M.A.C. #217 and #219)

Luminous Skin

Pat McGrath teamed up with Dolce & Gabbana to depict summers in Sicily. Glowing, healthy skin was the all the rage. Coupled with the illuminated skin were warm hues of coral, natural pinks and shades of red. To achieve radiant skin, a primer is a must. Some makeup lines offer iridescent pigments in the liquid foundations or you can add an illuminating cream to your face after primer, but before foundation, and recreate the same effect. Highlighting can be achieved with a number of textures; pen highlighters, liquids, and pigments (highly concentrated powder).*

*For radiant skin: BB cream, M.A.C. Strobe liquid, M.A.C. Brightening Serum, M.A.C. Pigments (available in various colors).

* The best brush will be a blending brush, My all-time favorite when applying anything to the face.  (Because I trust it, I use M.A.C. #187 and it also comes in a smaller version, #188)

Washed Out Color

For Derek Lam, Tom Pecheux incorporated color, but in a transparent, almost faint, application. Discrete usage of sheer color was combined with soft, almost nude, pink lips and cheeks. The face was rendered flawless and modern with emphasis on the natural features of the models.*

*Pigment, again, would be a good choice for this look. You will need a base, such as a paint or cream color base to stick press the pigment into. (M.A.C. Bare Canvas)

*White eyeliner in the membrane to further illuminate the eyes. I like “kohl” liner because they are soft and easily glide onto the surface. (M.A.C. Fascinating)

For those of us who dream of long luscious hair but are doomed with fine and thin hair, possibly your hair just won’t grow long enough, or maybe impatience is the problem. Regardless of the circumstance, there is a solution! HAIR EXTENSIONS!

Hair extensions add length and density to the hair. There are two types of extensions, real human hair or synthetic. Although synthetic is inexpensive, real human hair extensions offer the ability to flat iron, curl, blow dry, color, and cut to blend into your natural hair.

There are many different types of hair extension applications:

CLIP-IN:

Clip-in extensions use hair clips on tracks of hair so that you can attach them to your natural hair. These types of extensions are a temporary fix for long locks. Unfortunately, this can be a hassle putting them in and taking them out everyday for the sake of longer hair. However, they are a great idea for trial if your considering longer lasting options.

FUSION:

Fusion extensions are the longest lasting option for hair extensions. Because of this, they can be very expensive. One thing to consider about fusion extensions is the application. As you can see in the picture, tiny bundles of hair extensions are fused onto tiny bundles of your hair by melting an adhesive onto the root of your hair. The problem with fusion extensions is the removal which requires harsh chemicals to break down the adhesive. In addition, the tiny bundles of your hair are under constant stress and can become weak, resulting in breakage. Entire bundles of hair can fall out at once. When your natural hair grows with a fusion attached, the outcome can result in tough knots near the root area much like a dreaded lock.

SEW-IN:

Sew-in extensions literally sew tracks of hair onto a tiny braid of your natural hair. Although this type of application doesn’t last as long as fusion, there is no damage to your natural hair. This application is much more affordable and is durable. With proper care, the extensions can last for months. Maintenance includes retightening the braid as your hair grows and reattaching the tracks of hair.

Our own extension guru, Sabrina, has been working with hair extensions for the last 6 years. Her expertise tells us the industry is once again using the sew-in method for extension application. Take a look at how she took Lisa, who is has extremely thin/fine hair, to her ticker more luscious dream hair! After working with Lisa to find a perfect color match, the process began.

She started by braiding a micro braid tight to the scalp to sew the first track of hair onto.

Viola! The first track sewn on! After a few more tracks we’re in place..

Results:

Lisa now has added length and with triple the thickness of her fine hair. The tracks are disguised and the extensions are perfectly blended into her natural hair. She looks great!! She also attested to how natural they felt!
