MONDAY’S MAKEUP

COMPLEXION! As with anything in art, you begin with the perfect canvas. Even in hair and makeup. For a hair stylist, if the client doesn’t have healthy hair, it’s much harder to create a new style, so we spend the bulk of our time offering a new hair regimen to nourish the hair back to a gorgeous canvas to support new styles. It’s the same for makeup! For a gorgeous application, the foundation must be properly nourished. Speaking in terms of your skin, of course!

I began my career in the beauty industry as an Esthetician. Skin care is my second passion! Over the past 6 years I’ve done product research and trials, learned about ingredients, and what works best for different skin types. Let’s explore and I’ll give my best tips and advice! Keep in mind I’m only elaborating on skin balance for your complexion, there’s much more detail for full skin care regimens.

Grab a piece of tissue paper ladies, we’re going to determine what type of skin you have! This test is best done in the morning after waking up. Simply take the paper and wipe your skin.

  • SKIN TYPES

If the paper has no traces of oil, you belong in the normal to dry category.

NORMAL SKIN- vibrant, smooth and supple, elastic, great circulation, and least problematic! Lucky you!

DRY SKIN- you’re skin will feel tight and possibly flakey after wiping. Dry skin tends to look sallow due to poor circulation. You have tiny pores and have a tendency to wrinkle faster. You may also be prone to skin irritants. Anti-aging and hydration should be your best friend FOREVER.

If you found traces of oil on your tissue paper, your skin is considered either oily, or combination.

OILY SKIN- large pores with greasy, shiny skin which tends to be problematic. On the negative, oily skin is most likely to be acneic, However, on the positive, it is not as prone to aging and wrinkles due to the conditioning of the excess sebum!

COMBINATION SKIN- generally characterized by an oily zone on the forehead, between the eyes, down the nose and across the inner cheeks.

SENSITIVE SKIN- any of these skin types can suffer from sensitivities and irritants generally caused by  skin imbalance.

  • SKIN BALANCING

Now that you understand your skin type, here’s a little bit of information on taking care of your skin, product recommendations, ingredients to avoid, ect. Skin care, simply put, is learning to balance your skin type. There are many great skin care lines on the market and it may take multiple regimen trials (allow 4-6 weeks of dedication as it can take up to 4 weeks of transition to begin seeing results) to find what works best for YOU.

NORMAL SKIN- As with EVERY skin type, aging prevention should be your main concern with skin care. The best anti-aging remedy is PREVENTION! It’s never too early to begin using products with antioxidant ingredients to fight free radicals which cause wrinkles! Early 20′s ladies, if you’re past that age, start today!

We recommend Intensive Skin Repair Serum by Yes to CarrotsIt’s free of petroleum and parabens while blueberries help to fight the formation of free radicals! Sold online.

DRY SKIN- Stay away from products containing mineral oil (white oil, liquid paraffin, liquid petroleum). This ingredient is found in most cheaper brands (i.e. petroleum jelly and most “drug store” skin care) as is it very inexpensive for manufacturers to obtain in large quantities. However, it has been linked to premature aging (yuck!) and acts like plastic wrap on the skin. The molecules of mineral oil are too large for the pores in your skin to absorb so it sits on the outside of the skin creating a barrier. This blocks skin respiration and the skin from releasing toxins! Oxygen is important for sallow skin types.

Also consider this, most “moisturizers” are meant to create that “barrier” to “lock in” moisture. So they use the mineral oil which is cheap. However, your skin is already dry, so what exactly are you “locking in?” Wouldn’t you rather use a product that is actually going to hydrate your dry skin?? Your BFF from today forward should be hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronan). HA is found naturally in the body and aids in soft tissue function and joint support! For skin care, it can contain up to 1,000x its own weight in moisture and draws that moisture in through the air (skin respiration).

It is also beneficial to stay away from harsh detergents in face washes (the SAME ones used in your dishwashing liquids that are advertised to fight “tough baked on grease,” sodium lauryl sulfate/sodium laureth sulfate, which dry the skin more.

We recommend Hyaluronic Acid Serum by Reviva Labs to gain and retain moisture in your skin! Sold online and at ULTA.

OILY SKIN- Take note, over stimulating the skin with vigorous rubbing or the harsh abrasives of exfoliants will exacerbate the over production of oil. The vicious cycle for acne prone skin is this: you have too much oil being produced because your skin is imbalanced, that extra oil blocks your pores, you get a pimple, you use products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to dry it up, this dries your skin out, so your skin thinks it needs more oil, so it produces more.. You see the cycle? It’s never ending. Find a balance. It’s also helpful to stay away from these ingredients that tend to over dry or irritate (cause breakouts) the skin:

propylene glycol (an ingredient used in break fluid and anti-freeze)
dimethicone, silicone (anything ending in cone)
mineral oil or petrolatum (petrol oils, from the refining process of the gasoline industry)
sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate (harsh, over drying detergents)
fragrance (can be made up of 1000′s of different chemicals that do not have to be listed)
silica (some can tolerate it, others cannot)
caprylic, capric triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil- used often in organic cosmetics)
bismuth oxychloride (mineral makeup ingredient that has been processed with tin and copper)
lauryol lysine (coconut oil derivative)
rice powder (can cause breakouts in some)
A product we DO recommend is Mineral Therapy Acne Treatment by Faerie Organic. It calms the skin which reduces redness and inflammation, and it absorbs oil and toxins with natural minerals! Sold online only.
COMBINATION SKIN- The oily “T” zone of combination skin should be treated as the oily skin type above. The skin which is prone to being dry needs extra hydration. We suggest the same type of hydration as for dry skin only to be applied to the dry areas.
We recommend using the Get Glowing Acne Kit also by Faerie Organic for proper combination skin balancing. Choose the Dewy Glow Moisture as your moisturizer (with your choice of cleanser) which will serve as a great option for oily and dry skin! Sold online only.
SENSITIVE SKIN- Keep skin calm by using products that are pure. Finding a brand that is truly organic is a great option. We suggest avoiding the same types of ingredients listed under the oily skin type.
We recommend the Chamomile & Rosehip Sensitive Skin Cream by Pai Skin Care. All of their products were created to treat sensitive and allergy prone skin! It’s free of everything bad!
  • MAKEUP
Now that you have a better understanding of how to keep your skin balanced creating a gorgeous canvas for a makeup application, here are our recommendations for a makeup foundation to create a flawless complexion!
NORMAL/DRY SKIN- We suggest using a tinted moisturizer dusted with a light translucent or mattifying powder to kick any dewy glow. Try Tarte Cosmetics which are sold online or at Ulta! Normal skin types might prefer just a pigmented translucent powder which they also sell.
OILY/COMBINATION/SENSITIVE  SKIN- Because your skin is prone to breakouts, inflammation, and irritants, we suggest a mineral makeup that is pure and also offers ingredients to calm the skin and offer anti-bacterial properties. Try the mineral makeup offered by Faeire OrganicThey even have a “max coverage” version that has extra pigments for skin with acne. Most mineral makeup contains “bismuth oxychloride” which we previously learned is a skin irritant and can cause breakouts. This brand does NOT contain the ingredient. Sold online only.
CONCEALER- All skin types may require extra coverage in certain areas due to breakouts, redness, hyper pigmentation, or dark circles under the eye during your skin balancing transition. Here’s a great concealer to try out, it’s always great to have some on hand when necessary! Here’s a favorite from My Chelle Dermaceuticals for dark circles which offers on the go convenience while nourishing! Sold online and at Whole Foods. This product DOES contain silica so we don’t suggest using it to cover breakouts. Faerie Organic offers a pure mineral concealer for that.
In addition, we recommend protecting against UV rays everyday and using loofah exfoliation with your cleansers weekly to further benefit your complexion and skin balancing. Some of these products we listed offer SPF protection. In conclusion, take care of your complexion for awesome makeup applications! Check your product cabinet and read ingredient labels!

MONDAY’S MAKEUP

Posted on: August 7th, 2012 by intricidsalon 7 Comments

As a hair salon, we usually focus our energy on hair. However, makeup is such a huge part of our industry for brides, special events, and photo shoots. Let it be known that we DO offer makeup services at INTRICID (appointment only)!

We have officially committed Monday’s to inspirational makeup posts. Read on for some killer makeup tips!

A makeup look that we LOVE and has been ever so popular since the 1950s is the Cat Eye. This “winged eyeliner” look is essential for a modern approach to makeup. It’s great to explore vintage looks for makeup inspiration. Vintage styles will always be recycled. Luckily, we live in an innovative timeframe and have the ability to take vintage styles and add creative/unique twists to them.

Vintage makeup

Creative Cat Eye/winged eyeliner variations

Vintage styles generally paired the Cat Eye with red lips, whereas, modern day styles pair all sorts of lip shades. This gives the vintage inspired look a creative uniqueness. Choosing your own lip shade also allows individuality which we highly encourage! If you’re opting for an authentic vintage look, here’s a red lip guide to follow:

Redspiration!

Be bold and unique!

Here’s a few of our favorite inspired looks:

NASTY GAL

Classic

Comtemporary

Vintage

That last photo brings up an entirely new approach to the Cat Eye! If you’re really wanting to show off some creative and individuality, try colored liner instead of classic black, check it out:

How adorable is this monochromatic palette of pink?? If this is too bold, opt for natural lip shade and keep the “wing” very subtle like so..

So, how does one master a “winged eyeliner” effect? Here’s a video how-to from one of our favorite bloggers Gloss + Dirts post, Look 72% More Sexual in like Two Minutes. Watch and master!

Have any questions? Did you try one of these looks?

EXPLORING THE RAINBOW WITH HAIR

Posted on: August 2nd, 2012 by intricidsalon 2 Comments

As a hair stylist, I have always found myself a more visual person. For me, photographs spark more emotion than reading. Reading is important for learning, however, most times I just need a beautiful photo or piece of art to get inspired. Maybe this explains my nerdy obsession with graphic novels, magazines, and only looking at the pictures in picture books as a kid (and even now)!

That being said, I have chosen to explore one of the most beautiful aspects of nature, the rainbow, through hair!

Thoughts? Leave ‘em!

All the best,

HAIR OBSESSIONS

Posted on: July 26th, 2012 by intricidsalon 3 Comments

When hair is your passion, it’s easy to get obsessed with certain styles, looks, and eras. Then, like trends of modern day, the obsession drifts in the wind and another style has caught the eye! Here are some photos that we’ve obsessively accumulated throughout summer!

HIPPIE HAIR-  truly vintage or inspired by, who doesn’t love gorgeous long locks with natural textures, adorable braids and adornments, all the while blowing in the wind and illuminated by the sun??

AFRO HAIR- there’s something glorious about the expansion of ethnic hair textures in their natural state. We’d love to see this style arise from the grave where we are!

Has anyone heard of the musical HAIR?? Without much elaboration, it’s a story set in the time of the hippie counter-culture. It’s a must see full of quirky and unexpected moments. Word of advice, see it without knowing too much! (Not suitable for younger crowds) It was also quite the pleasure on Broadway in NY.

And to conclude.. a little jam session..

What hair types are you currently obsessed with? We LOVE photos, share them on our wall: www.facebook.com/intricidsalon!

All the best,

A RAZORED TEXTURE

Posted on: July 9th, 2012 by intricidsalon 25 Comments

Image

What classifies as sexy hair? LESS WEIGHT and MORE MOVEMENT! Drop the aerosol, ladies! It’s time love your hair without feeling the need to plaster it like a helmet! There’s nothing more beautiful than movement in the hair. Photographers even devote photo shoots to capturing these amazing moments of movement.

Image

Image

Now, clearly these artistic photos were staged to capture the gorgeous flow of hair. So, how do we implement movement in the hair on a daily basis without whipping our hair back and forth like Willow or carrying huge industrial fans around?? We create movement by removing weight in the hair!

By using a razor in the hair, we have more creative freedom! To some of you, this may sound scary. A lot of people have experienced a BAD razored haircut. Let me assure you, it was not the tool-of-choice that gave the bad cut, it was the technician behind the tool. There is much more to a razored haircut than simply implementing a razor for a disheveled texture. It takes dedication and discipline to cut an entire head of hair with a razor AND have it turn out perfectly! A lot of stylists use a guard on the blade which doesn’t allow for precision.

I have personally been razor cutting for over 2 years. I picked up my razor when I began to indulge in ARROJO education. I wanted to perfect my precision razor cutting skills. So, I tossed the guard! The craft to razor cutting begins with learning the fundamentals, once that is perfected you can begin to implement more advanced technique. Now, I find myself branching off into more creative razor cutting. Rather than following a cutting pattern I’ve learned, I like to create my own. Every head is different and requires it’s own perfectly manicured cut. Razoring the hair helps me enable natural movement and swing for everyday modern and low-maintanence hairstyles. I can create the cutest pixies, allow more space in the hair to redefine textured hair, and create more blended and softer layering with a razor. Everything I’ve learned from the masters at ARROJO, I’m teaching my stylists at the salon. They, too, have taken hands-on fundamental classes to perfect their skill. We are always learning and expanding our knowledge so that we can better serve you and your unique hair desires. Our belief is true to being a student for life.

Other ways we keep the hair moving beautifully is with hair integrity! Healthy, shiny hair moves, styles better, and is much more low-maintenance. We encourage ARROJO Product because we’ve seen the difference it has made in clients hair that use the product daily. It nourishes the hair with vitamin B5 and minerals. We’re also not risk takers with chemicals. Over processed hair does not move, shine, or style easily.

Check out some of the beautifully razored and everyday hairstyles that were created by our friends at ARROJO.

There’s soft and disheveled texture, straight and jagged lines, but most of all, sexy movement and swing in the hair! Each style is sustained with ARROJO Product which holds the style in place, but allows it to swing and move throughout the day.

Our recommendation: DEFRIZZ SERUM

I’ve pulled this post from StyleNoted entitled, An Old Wives Tale, Disambiguated, because it talks about razor cutting myths.

“There are many misguided ideas about hair, especially with regard to how to cut, color, and style it. From believing that trimming hair makes it grow faster to thinking a new hair color guarantees extra fullness, our collective consciousness is inundated with age old ideas that appear comforting and fun. But this misguided gospel muddy’s the waters of successful, easy styling. In the modern world, one of the biggest myths surrounds razor-cutting. Nowadays more and more hairdressers cut with a razor instead of scissors. It’s an excellent way to create modern, low-maintenance hairstyles. Yet with all the myths and the legends, you may think it a sworn enemy of chic, stylish tresses. Let’s separate the myth from the reality…

Step: “Razor-cutting is bad for hair health –– it damages my lovely cuticles.” No it doesn’t. A stylist who is untrained in the proper technique and who, as a consequence, fails to angle the blade correctly, will damage the health of your hair.

Step: “I much prefer a guarded blade. It’s so much safer.” A guarded blade is less precise and gives the stylist less feeling for, and less engagement with, the shape and the style. Stylists confident with a straight edge blade are the best razor-cutters.

Step: “Ouch, it tugs at my hair!” If you have experienced a tugging at the hair feeling with a razor-cut it means the stylists blade was not sharp enough. When getting a razor-cut, ask your stylist to use a fresh blade

Step: “The razor doesn’t work for my curly hair.” This is one of the saddest myths because, in the right hands, the razor is better at cutting texture than scissors. So long as the stylist directs the razor correctly with the curl pattern, it encourages a more consistent curl.

Step: “I like one-length looks and the razor only makes shattered shapes.” No, a razor can cut a very precise clean line with a slightly jagged edge, which is actually more forgiving and aids the grow out and the styling versatility.

Step: “It’s good for thick hair, but it destroys fine hair like mine.” Again, this comes down to the technique of the hairdresser but, ultimately, it’s a total myth. The razor is great for fine hair because that little jagged line aids texture and body, while soft lines –– which occur naturally in razor-cutting –– is exactly what baby fine hair needs.”

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE PROS

Posted on: June 28th, 2012 by intricidsalon 66 Comments

We’ve gathered some of our favorite ARROJO Products! Find out why we love them so much! Also, visit each stylists professional site by clicking their name.

Curl Enhancer is a reformulation of one of my favorite products for curls, Curl Creme. I didn’t think Curl Creme could get any better, yet, it did! This product goes in easily, creates curls with more bounce, hydrates, and isn’t sticky or crispy when dry! Soft, springy, frizz free curls! I use with Frizz control or hydrating mist depending on the clients hair needs! -Amber

Image

ReFINISH Dry shampoo is a complete must for any person who doesn’t wash daily. It’s a dry cleaner for the hair which soaks up oils. Unlike most dry shampoos, ReFINISH also adds volume, texture, and an amazing scent! It’s starch based and doesn’t leave a white residue. You can still run your fingers through your hair, it will not be matted up like other powdery volumizing products or teasing which is damaging to the hair. -Jade

Image

I work with a lot of hair textures which need conditioning daily! So, I always send them home with our Daily Conditioner. It can be used in the shower as a normal conditioner, but it is light enough to be left in the hair as a leave-in. It’s adds a silky feel, helps control dryness and tangles, and smells phenomenal with the scent of organic rhubarb! As with all the products, it’s going to help nourish the hair with vitamin B5! -Sabrina

Image

I love ARROJO cock-tails! My favorite is Volume Foam and Styling Whip! Volume Foam plumps up the hair shaft for optimum volume, and Styling Whip adds conditioning and shiny body to the hair with argon oil!  Applying Volume foam on the roots, Styling Whip on the mid-shaft to ends, and using a round brush makes for an amazing Dallas blowout. I also mix them together, distribute evenly, and diffuse in for a nice beachy texture! Both of these work great with Shine Spray and ReFINISH. -Charlie Anne

Image

Image

One of my favorite go-to products is the Defrizz Serum. It’s adds a shiny sleek finish to clients when used on wet hair and blow-dried in. I also put a tiny amount onto hair with weak ends to help the appearance in clients who don’t want to cut as much length off that is needed for split ends. It’s got an amazing blend of lavender and pear scent in conjunction with Vitamin B5 to nourish the hair! -Megan

Image

I love the Gentle Shampoo and Conditioner because it’s sodium chloride and sulfate free. It’s great for clients who are ingredient cautious. It works perfectly for color treated hair, and the natural and organic oils in the products work best for dry, itchy scalps! The scent is very pleasant in the mornings of an herbal verbena! -Jennifer
